After meeting the chronometer standards of the time, Grand Seiko set its own accuracy standards in 1966. By 1998, advancements in materials and craft gave rise to the New Grand Seiko Standard. Every movement undergoes rigorous testing in six positions and three temperatures over seventeen days. The craftsmen and women uphold their commitment to quality while consistently exploring the limits of possibility.
 
The SBGJ203 has a beautifully delicate and polished finish which has been created on the dial, with a 'Mount Iwate pattern', inspired by the many-ridged contours of the Mt. Iwate, the mountain that is visible through the windows of the Shizuku-Ishi Watch Studio where Grand Seiko mechanical watches are made.
 
The Mt.  Iwate is equiped with the Calibre 9S86, a high-specification movement which delivers the same accuracy (+5 to -3 seconds a day) and the same power reserve (55 hours) as the core Caliber 9S85, while also offering the GMT function that the international traveler needs to ensure that the accuracy of the time shown is not compromised when the time zone is changed. The GMT hand shows the time in the home time zone.
 
Pulling the crown out by one notch enables the hour hand to be adjusted without stopping the seconds hand so that the highly accurate timekeeping delivered by the Hi-Beat 36000 is not lost. Caliber 9S86 is the embodiment of the Grand Seiko ideal of high accuracy, maintaining exceptional precision in both the essential time of day display and the GMT function.
